The film is written and directed by Tony Elliott, who has precious as an Exec Story Editor on Orphan Black, and stars Robbie Amell, Rachael Taylor and Gray Powell. The problem? The technology has some complicated, timely-wimey side effects… The sci-fi thriller takes place in a dystopian future, where an engineer has invented a technology with the potential to provide unlimited energy – only to find his house surrounded by masked intruders trying to get their hands on it. Netflix has released the first trailer for ARQ, its latest indie film. Trailer: ARQ arrives on Netflix on 16th September “I really love exploring big, existential ideas in science-based, fantastical settings, and then distilling those stories to what really matters - the human element,” he adds. At it’s core, ARQ is hopeful.”Įlliott is no stranger to dystopian sci-fi, having written for TV series Orphan Black and 12 Monkeys. I believe that for myself as I do for humanity. That we will change, as long as we never give up. “It’s about believing that we can change, if we keep trying. “ARQ is a story about fighting for what matters, no matter the odds or the obstacles,” says writer-director Tony Elliott. They must figure out how to stop the time loop and come out of it alive. The catch? The technology has created a time loop that causes them to relive a deadly home invasion over and over again. The dystopian sci-fi thriller is set in a future where corporations battle against sovereign nations over the last of the world’s energy supplies, while young engineer Renton and Hannah find themselves attempting to save an experimental energy technology that could end the wars. This is easily manageable for the genre lovers, but they too will probably not be able to suppress a number of yawning in the long run.ARQ arrives on Netflix this Friday – and, just to whet your appetite, a new clip from the film has been released. Nice promise, this film, but unfortunately the mediocre and quite tension-free effect of ARQ has killed it. What also didn't really contribute was that the acting wasn't very strong, especially by the enemy camp and that the story dragged on too much once the monkey was out of the sleeve. This was because little by little I had already lost all my attention because the makers didn't manage to keep tension in it. Much of the background story had to be visualized, obviously for budget reasons, and the finale felt a bit ant-climactic and unsatisfying. Also, the whole movie felt a bit too cheap as well. This was because I found it difficult to sit through the entire runtime because the story was told so muddled. When I saw the plot description and trailer of ARQ I was immediately sold.Īlthough the makers with the concept immediately had my attention, this attention could not be kept well. I usually find films with the timeloop principle manageable and I am not tired of the concept at the moment.
